I've got an original owner 1991 without any wire chops, but I've never tried to activate the flashers without the key. I'll give it a try and see what happens. I had not read your post but I do have the same year bike. My ignition switch is not my original, but it is a Harley ignition put in at dealer during accident repair many years ago.

Luckily, I've never broken down in 22 years and had to consider this scenario.

Okay, had to take her out for a ride to make sure battery was up to charge. Nice brisk afternoon for sure. I guess shorts and a sweatshirt is pretty bad for mid-February, but someone's got to do it.

This is for a 1991 with stock wiring and I am the original owner.

Ignition Switch Settings (engine not running):

OFF - No power, key removable

ACC - Power to head, tail, and front running lights, flashers DO NOT work. Key seems removable when you move from OFF to ACC, but not IGN to ACC, not sure what the deal is there, but I do have a dealer installed replacement switch.

IGN - Power to all, OIL and NEUTRAL lights on, flashers work, my single TURN indicator lights when flashers activated individually, left or right. Key is NOT removable.

When both flashers (emergency) activated, TURN indicator light seems to not work, but NEUTRAL light flashes a bit. When I switch to ACC, flashers stop.

When I shut bike down with flasher going, they stopped too.

My FSM says nothing about the behavior of the TURN or NEUTRAL indicator lights, just about pushing and holding for emergency light function. I think this was the first year of a setup with emergency lights, so maybe it's just very rudimentary in operation. My owners manual is just as sparse in information about what does what when emergency lights engaged.

Looks like you have to have the key in it and ignition ON to operate the emergency flashers, pretty lame setup.

Thanks John, I suspected the flashers on the early 90's bikes might operate differently than the later models.

Yep, that sounds like mine except I can't take the key out in accessory position. Maybe it's to let everyone know what a hazard I am when I'm riding! () My ignition is still in that highly accessable place under the tank, so I doubt it would break the key if I dumped the bike. Anyway, the wiring checks out O.K. so I think I'll just leave it as is and hope I never have to use the hazards. Thanks for all the input guys.

All I can figure is that it's designed for you to pull to the side of the road briefly while the engine is running and warn other drivers while you wipe bugs off your face.
