I agree with Reaper Crew. I have mids and like the control I have by having my legs and feet in that position. If I want to stretch out then highway pegs are the way to go. You get the best of both worlds.

This.

Mids with highway pegs provide the best options for handling and long distance comfort.

Once you get past trying to hit the phantom brake that isn't there any more when you're used to mids. I had highway pegs and had to overcome the need to reposition my feet to stop and down shift.

+1
I found the highway pegs a more comfortable position, but not being close to the brake or shifter unsafe. So I switched for OEM forwards. As Kevin from DK mentioned above, they aren't that far forward, for me, at 5'7", they are extremely comfortable.

my new forwards (and the DK lowering block that I just put in):

Before buying my bike I test rode a low (mids) and a custom (forwards). I felt more at home on the low with the mids because that's what I was used to having @ 30 yrs dirt experience. You have a better sense of applying weight to each peg to assist in certain situations like turning or encountering obstacles, downed riders & such. And if ya need to get your *** off the seat for some reason (it happens) it's much easier with mids.
A coupla yrs ago, wanting some options but not wanting to give up the mids, I installed highway pegs. Best of both worlds.
Now being able to position my fet in either location it doesn't really seem to make any difference as far as control goes. And by control I'm guessing you mean manuvering in traffic or negotiating fast turns and so on.
With highway pegs though you don't want to be caught with your feet away from the foot controls when somewthing happens requiring quick reactions. So my feet stay planted on the mids in traffic or in town with frequent stops. Otherwise I feel like I have just as much control with my feet in either position.

I'm a 130lb, 5'5" 69yo male with a 29"inseam. My 2009 XL883 low had mid controls when I bought it and due to some arthritis in my hips and knees was very uncomfortable. I tried a friends sportster with forward controls and found them more comfortable so I had forward controls installed on mine. Now after a longish ride, I can actually walk into the restaurant without grimacing in pain. Much better!
