Default Suggestions for a new guy?

Hey, i'm a 18-year old young man who's mad on motorcycles. I would do anything for a harley-davidson! I dont have much experience on motorcycles (ok, i don't have any). I have seen sporters go for $3,000 and under on ebay, and that's pretty much all i could afford until i get more income. Do you think a used sporter would be a good start for someone with no bike experience? I know honda and kawa make starter 250cc bikes, but japanese bikes... not sure! And i'm a big guy, 5'11, 280 pounds. So i'm not even sure it would do 60mph, hehe.
What do you think?

If you are a sensible dude, you can handle a sportster. Once you get comfortable, you can go bigger. Make sure and take a motorcycle safety course.

Welcome to the forum, troublemaker.

5'11" won't be a problem with a sporty. I'm 5'11" and I think the sporty fits me great. I do wonder about the 280 though. If you were to put someone on the back you'd be pushing the load limit of the ride. Although I dontthink they are uncomfortable at all, Sportsters aren't known for their comfortable ride, and 280 lbs on it will make it rouher still. What they are known for is their manuverability, and 280 will reduce that a bit.

Can someone that weighs that much comment on this?

Any sportster you can buy should handle the load as well as any 250cc rice burner. Not sure how well that will be but buying the 250cc will definately not be the answer.

When looking at the low prices on ebay, under $3K, make sure you look at the "title" listed on ebay. In many cases they may besalvage titles.

Wow! Thanks for all the quick replies. I'll definately take the Safety Course, i think it's mandatory here, but i want to take it anyway. I plan on getting (plan, mind you.) a 1200, probably a custom. I really dont think a 883 could handle me.

You would be fine on an 883. If it makes you 'feel' better mentally to get the 1200, then do it. But don't do it because you think the 883 can't take you anywhere, the 883 won't even blink at that.

Make sure you save an appropriate amount of money for safety gear if you value your skin.
