Default Chain ratio??????

Ok I'm going over to a chain and sprockets on my 09 iron.
Before the masses start tell me not too or the belts better, I agree but due to me putting in a new wide rear wheel I can't, I don't have the clearance between tyre and swing arm.
My question is on the ratio side, keep seeing on listings go 41t rear for better highway speeds, loss the feel for a 6th gear.
Is this true?
From what I've been able to find a stock ratio is 51t on the rear and 21t on the front, anyone dropped to a 41t rear? Any feel on torque or highway driving?

Wink

You know what the front and rear pulley sizes are for your belt drive. Take the larger tooth count and divide into it the smaller tooth count, which will give you the rear drive ratio. They are likely to be 68 and 29, giving a ratio of 2.34.

When sizing up a chain drive you should look to achieve a ratio very close to the belt drive ratio. What ratios do conversion kits offer? Don't go far from that as you risk losing performance, not gaining it.

Give us more details and we can help you through the maze!

Will give the belt pulleys a count, what more details do you need grbrown? Any help through the maze is very helpful.

That kit is 51 and 21, which gives a ratio of 2.43, which is pretty close to the ratio I mentioned earlier.

The pulley sizes are in your owners manual. If you don't have one you can go to Harley's USA website and the 'Owners' tab and download one.

21 48 or a 22 48 are very popular combos. 21/48 is factory gearing on 5 speed solid mounts 22/48 is about in between an 883 and 1200. A 41 tooth would not work on your bike at all.

What size is the bike? The more hp you have, the taller gear you can put in it and still not loose bottom end grunt and quickness.
