Default 1250 install review

Ok, I went to NHRS (NRHS?) and bought the 883 to 1250 kit plus Andrew N4 cams...went elsewhere and bought big valves, a spark controller, and 185 main and I think 45 pilot jet (as per the Andrews instructions) for my 2000 883 hugger...Install was quite easy, took my time and it took about 8-10 hours total ....bike started right up...was running rich so i went down to 170 main jet and a 40 idle jet and the bike is running good with a slight ping at low RPMS going up a hill...I had a machinist (my brother) install the big valves and open up the ports so the new valves could do their job...Now for the fun part, the bike is FAST, it really comes alive around 2500 RPMS and keeps pulling hard to the red line...before the change out the bike worked hard to stay at 70, now it is not even struggling and much quieter at that speed...with out much work I can easily run it up to 95 at which point it starts to run out of gearing (I haven't changed the sprocket) although I am sure I could easily pass 100mph.....the hardest thing about the changeout was getting the push rod tube bottom gaskets and o-rings to stay put while I put the heads on (what a pain in the ***)...all in all I recommend anyone with a 883 to make the jump, money well spent....As it sits right now it may not out run my Roadking but it would pull ahead for the first 100-200 yards, after that the Roadking will blow past it a keep going well over a 100 mph...(2011 RK, 103, V&H power duels, se ac, se-255 cams, PCV) ...But damn this little sporty is fast and fun to ride....

Are you running a stock CV40 carb? A 42/170 is what I run on my 883. You need at least a 45/180 on a 1250 build (also what NRHS uses as a starting point). How did you verify your mixture?

Good for you mrfikser, that's got to make an incredible, and very welcomed difference.

the 45/180 is what I started with and it was running rich...black plugs and exhaust....so I went don to the 170 (which is what I was also running on my 883)...I am going to break it in for a bit and try to go up again to see how it runs

Thumbs up

Great stuff! With that sort of build it is well worth getting it dyno tuned when run in.

Isn't a 40 pilot jet too small? I thought the CA bikes came with a 42 pilot, and that's a lean setting already. I think you set your timing back a few degrees as well. That could be your source of pinging.
