Can't help with the thicker part but wrapping pipes is cheap and easy. I've done it twice now and am very pleased.

A quick search here will result in tips but some of the basics are to soak the wrap and to use worm gear type hose clamps instead of the metal zip tie like things they sell.

Also, the wrap can actually be kind of fragile against rubbing, I chewed a hole with a 6" ratchet extension while tightening the exhaust bolts. The knurled grippy part was rubbing against the exhaust.

why don't you just remove the heat shields from your current pipes and wrap it then? Several folks on here have done that to the short shots.

That's what I was thinking. Just wrap them 2-3 times more than normal.

Someone on here wrapped theirs with the heat shield still on. It was definitely thick.

I have been trying to find that thread but it is tough to do on my phone. Taking the shields off will make them to small for my liking. I would however like to build them up with something and then wrap them. At the end of the pipe is the muffler and it swells up. To get that old school look, it needs to be all the same size I think.

Just remember that if you wrap them with the heat shields on, you'll basically trash the finish on the shields in the event that you'd ever want to take the wrap off.

This is true, just wrap the pipes without the shields a few times like was said and you will get the fat look.

the heat shields are super easy to repaint though.... I repainted mine with VHT engine enamel and haven't had an issue with it at all in almost a year now.
