New to Forum > Sportster bound > Advice?
I'm new to this forum and looking to buy my first Harley.
Seriously considering a Sportster 1200.
There is one in my area that I am interested in > 2004 Sportster Roadster with 22,xxx miles. They are asking $5,500.
Spoke with the guy on the phone who has it at his shop. He seemed knowledgeable and ensured me it was a solid bike that was well maintained. The pictures look great and I plan to go check it out in person soon.
Curious if this is a good price (keep in mind I'm in Hawaii).
Blue book says $4,565 for an excellent condition used 04 in this area.
Mods:
.Tachometer
.Jet Kit
.Screaming Eagle Exhaust
.Screaming Eagle Air Filter

.Good Tires/brakes (dual front rotors)
Your expertise would be appreciated.
Waiting on my tax return to jump on a bike and it should be coming soon.
I am hoping to test ride different Harleys to make sure I want the sportster but dont want to set myself back in rental costs or get dealers hopes up by riding 6 bikes in a day and buying none.
Thanks,
Bryce
Be patient, like a guitar, the bike will find you.

Talking more and more with the guy.
He said there was 1 previous owner which was a friend of his who also took great care of it.
dealership service for 5k and 10k miles. Everything after that he maintained it himself but assures me he maintains his farm equipment, chainsaws, bikes, and everything else he owns very well.
Said his wife was asking why he wants to get a different bike if this one runs so great.
Sounds good. I'll be going to check it out next week.
Apparently there is a "Waimea" on both islands.
Kind of a bummer but it doesn't completely count it out.
I took a look at another bike today that I'd like to get everyone's opinion on.
Test drove it and liked it a lot but there were a couple things that might be considered red flags.
Here is the CL ad.

When I test drove it, it ran great. Pulled hard and handled well.
Paint is gettin a little old, I would definitely want to get the tank and fenders re-painted.
There was a small leak that was coming out of the bottom of the air filter.
He said it was the first time he'd seen it.
He just called back and said that the oil soaked the air filter because the line next to the carb leaked. Sound about right?
Told me he is going to have it fixed this weekend and give me a call back.
When I left I told him I'm still interested but would want that taken care of.
Other than that, there was no Speedo, Tachometer, Odometer, or mirrors.
He said he has the Odometer that he can put back on it and that he took it off to relocate it on the new bars.
He says there's about 13k on the bike. The title said 12,000 and that showed a date of January 2013. Do they certify the miles somehow when they register bikes?
Your input is appreciated.
I want to make sure I am positive about a bike before I pull the trigger
