My Iron 883 is my 1st Harley ,hell it's my 1st bike in over 30yrs,ok the other day I put black short shots on it,and while taking off the stock pipes I noticed I really liked the look of the stock header pipes with out the shields on,my question is,is there a big difference in the heat felt with out the shields on?and when you see wrapped pipes it is w/0 the shields right?and if I were to take the black shields off the short shots and wrap them would it be ok,and lastly do you have to take pipes off to wrap them?thanks

*You'll feel an appreciable amount of heat from removing your heat shields...
*Lots of guys here wrap their pipes with the shields on because the skinny header pipes going to the larger diameter mufflers makes it look "odd"...
*It would be fine to wrap your header pipes though some claim that it causes weakness in the metallurgy of the tubing, eventually causing cracks over time [I have seen examples of this]...
*And yes, unless you want to be eternally frustrated, engine pipe removal is highly recommended before undertaking the wrap job, to provide you easy access and a way of "rolling out" the covering around the tubes without anything being in your way or having to unravel it to slither it through tight spaces whilst trying to keep consistant spacing and tension. 'Nuthin worse looking than a shoddy wrap job, where neatness counts...

j, if anything, it's not a permanant mod without alot of expense, plus you'll always have the original heat shields [don't throw them out!!] to put back on should you change your mind.
