and in any case, you probably wont care about "miles per gallon"... you will become much more focused on "smiles per gallon"!!
from what I read cobra is very performance oriented, so these will actually improve performance and sound,,., I bought a set of cobras for a metric bike years ago and was very happy with them so I'm kind of biased towards their stuff. SE ones also look nice though but HD raised the price of them to $300.

Your wrist will affect your mpg more than these pipes will. My 106 gets over 50mpg on the highway. Your 1200 only gets 43.
I love fuel injection.
That 6th gear is what really helps you, I can get up to 47 if I slow down but the sportster loves to run between 80-90 on the interstate. my sportster only costs me $6,500 so i'm happy with it.
