What year is your bike. If its an 06, some of thenm had cats in one muffler, and you can't remove them. I drilled out my 07s with a 1 3/4 inch hole sawdrill bit. Took about 15 minutes. The sound is alot better, plus your bike will run a little cooler. Hope this helps.
Wrath, ..........I don't agree with aerospades on the feeling that once it's out, it's out. You could reweld it back in if necessary. The 06 year definately has a catalytic convertor to contend with. I wonder if its possible to use another stock rear muffler on the front that has been drilled out?
Chase, I want to do the same with my new 07 1200 R but have heard a lot of talk about the fuel injection, did you do anything else? how much have you driven it since & do your plugs look like your getting a clean burn? how loud is it, like drag pipes or quieter? do the 07's not have CATS? do you know if it affects the warranty? sorry for all the questions but I don't want to screw up anything.
Thanks
Hotlap, I'll try an answer all your questions. It will not hurt your fuel injection, I put several hundred miles on mine with the only problem, it lost the Harley lope at idle. As far as the plugs, I was told with the gas we now buy, plug color isn't a good way to gauge your fuel mixture. Now its quite a bit loader than stock, and I even had a few BT riders remark how good it sounded with the baffles removed. The 07s do not have Cats in them, and my dealer never said a word about voiding the warrenty. He did however, suggest I get the SE A/C and do the Stage 1 download, which I did do, and it brought the Harley lope back at idle, plus gave me a few more horses. Hope this helps you out. IMHO, you will not be disappointed if you remove your baffles.
I drilled mine out with a 1 3/4" hole saw if i remember... sounded better but not as good as the V&H Shortshots that I have on now. If you want to go back to stock dont try to weld em back in, you can most likely find a set onebay for cheap$$$
I cut mine out with a hole saw. drilled the holes to 9/64th (all of them and there is a butt load.) stuffed them back in the muffler and had them welded back in. looks and sounds good. I bought a set of 04 stock pipes on ebay for 24 bucks(my 06 has a cat in the front muffler)and the welding cost me 52 buck so for 76 green and a little work i have a pretty good set of pipes. a word of caution. make sure you use a set of pipes that do not have a cat in them. I'm in the process of cutting the baffles out of a set of mufflers my brother got off ebay(one has a cat) and it is a serious pain in the ****. wished i would of looked before i started cutting......
