After 6 years of riding racers......I'm coming over to the "dark side". My racer buddies say they wont even wave to me on the streets anymore.
I've ridden rentals in florida before and I got hooked......as well here in montreal insurance and registration for racers is going sky high.
I dont want to spend a lot of money and I want to start with a sporty 883 (not even sure of the lingo)that I can give to the wife later on.
I've found a 2001 for $5850 (about 6500$ US), with some extras, chrome, spoiler, new tire, new belt etc...and it has 38000km (22000miles). i will offer $5300.
What do you guys think. Good deal ? good first Harley ? reliable ? Anything I should be aware of ?
Don't know about prices in your area but that's high, keep looking. A brand new 07 883 in black only sells for about $6500 USD plus freight, prep and tax.
new ones are much more expensive here. $11000 for an 07. average price for a used one is $6-7000.
Man, thats tough over there. I bought my 06 1200C including tax, freight, prep, slip on exhaust and re-jetted for $11,700 and I thought that was high. I know guys in Australia say it's about the same over there having to pay up to $3k more than US cost.
Good luck shopping but I would still look for something say in the 04 up range as that's when they started rubber mount engines which are more comfortable to ride without so much vibration and also went to the 150 vs. 130 rear tire and have a little better preformance heads and cams.

Seems to me the exchange rate is backwards. 1c$ = .86 us$. so 5850c = 5031us. I reciently paid $5.7k for a '04 1200r (6488c). So the price is still a little high......
That's too much , watch e-bay that will give you a idea what the market value is . I would consider a 1200 custom if you have 6 grand to spend. Look around the winter deals are out there , guys are trading up and need to sell because the bike they ordered is coming in.
I would buy at least the 883 custom although, to be honest, I think you will find the 883a little under-powered and will wish you bought a 1200. Now, if you get a 883 and do the 1200 conversion you will really have a screamer; the combo of gearing on the 883 and the extra HP of the 1200 is awesome!
I paid 4300 from a stealer for a 2000 XL883. It had 6607 miles on the clock when I bought it. I got close to 2 grand into it and it's finally the bike I wanted.
