thinking about getting the wife a 1200 custom if she likes it. anyhow... who rides there sportster long distances. or better yet whats your average distance before the bike makes you hate being on it. are they a stiff ride or are they pretty smooth? will she be able to do 500 miles in a day if need be ?she has sat on one but hasn't had a chance to test ride one.
I have never rode anything but a bagger so I have no idea about them. just wanting some info from guys/ladies who ride them. she is 5'9 with long legs and that is where the problem normally comes about.
Meh, it's all personal. Mine's strutted with drag bars and I can do 500 miles no big deal. But I would say if you changed out the shocks, springs, and the seat, it's fine for touring.
You can basically accessorize it to the point of being a rolling dresser if that's your thing.
I did a 1000 mile day last year on my 05 roadster (700 the day before and after). It is stock with a sundowner seat. 700 mile days no problem at all. I bought dyna for 2 up and top end. 1200 with stock mufflers only pulls hard to 85-90, tops at 105ish. Dyna pulls hard over 100. Remember with 3.3 gallon tank you are off the bike refueling every hour at WOT. I'm surprised at how different they feel, sporty easy revving sports car- dyna pulls like a tractor. I have the same bars and seat on both, dyna is Sport model with same front end as the Sporty.
4-500 is an average day trip for me. Running progressive fork springs and air shock. The only other thing I'd like to do is a seat but I'm saving for a new bike.
cool good info so far.... I don't mind changing out the fork springs or rear shocks. we are just basically trying to find a bike she has enough leg room on and don't feel cramped up. she hates floorboards and softtails make her feel cramped and she don't like dynas. othere then a sporty all that left is a touring bike and she says there to heavy for her to initially get stood up.
500-700-1000 miles a day? Is yalls point to get where your going or to enjoy the ride? If I have to be somewhere and need to go that far in a day Ill take the Lincoln.
I dont understand this obsession of distance per day. Ive belonged to several forums that cater to different modes of transport. Motorcycles are the only ones that brag about it.
In answer to your question.......yes...........as long as she has a seat that is comfortable to her she can go as far as any bagger.
Boom, I ride this 2007 1200 C on trips like a 300 mile round trip a couple of Mondays ago. I ride to western Pa. now and then, 370 miles one way. It wears Progressive 440s/13.5" and Progressive fork springs. The seat is a Sundowner. Its quite comfortale for me at 71 years of age.

Must be something wrong with that 1200. My 883 pulls hard at 90 and tops is slightly more than your 1200s. Thats measured with GPS speed. A 1200s gearing should top you out just over 120. Maybe your speedo is off or your throtle cable is way out of adjustment. Or its a 1200 conversion tuned real bad, you only said stock mufflers.

At times, the point is to get where you're going.
I do ~300 mile (lunch) rides every week, but after years of riding and still living in the same place, you eventually run out of roads you haven't ridden 100 times before.
When I get a few weeks off and can head to the twisties, the faster I can put the 700 miles of flat, straight roads behind me, the better. After that everything is much more fun and exciting.
So yes, with a good seat, shocks and windshield, you can tour on a Sporty.
