You know, I've never really heard anyone knock an 883. I have, however, heard of a lot of folks that upgrade their motors toa 1200 or 1250. It is quite common.

I bought a used 883 because it was around $1500.00 cheaper than any 1200 I could find, of the same year and mileage. I purchased my bike on e-bay for $6500.00 with 2500 kms on it. I bought my bike on the assuption that I was going to do a 1200 conversion., and other mods. The 1200 conversion with cams cost me around $700.00 so I figured I saved at least $800.00 in the deal. I ported and polished the heads myself, and matched the ports . I alsohad loads of fun doing the rebuild, and learned a lot aboutsportster motors. ..Mark

I dont get why you hear all the under powered stuff about 883s. The originals were 883cc my 64 CH was plenty fast and would pull the front wheel in 2nd if I wasnt careful. After that was stolen I got a 79 XLH 1000cc it was a pig. Both motors were stock the "little" one was faster. I did get a 1200 this time but only because I got a good deal and dont like the customs as much as the roadsters. I havent been able to ride the 12 yet since it wont stop snowing but I wont be suprised if the old CH is faster
Haven't been on an 883, but I rode hell out of Sportsters back in the late 60s and early 70s... Loved 'em! I plan on finding just the right fixer-upper one day when I get close enough to retirement to devote the time to one.

I towed a 1965 Chevy Malibu about 50 miles with a 69 XLH back in my mis-spent youth. (Never woulda done it sober.. well, maybe...) At any rate, the thing had enough power to tow a car, but it sure beat hell out of the engine. I lost a rear sprocket (Rivets came loose and bound up the brake shoes) and it busted the brace that ties the two cylinders together and to the frame. Cost me some $$$ to fix the thing when the front cylinder came apart from vibration.

The sporties I've ridden all had plenty of git-up & go, and there weren't any of the big twins that left me behind.

Because by today's standards they are. So are the 1200's and the
new 96 cubic inch'ers
A couple of modern 600 cc scoots are putting out north of 115 horses.
Liter bikes are delivering 160 horses to the rear wheel.

All of which matter a rat's ***.

If it works for you ... it works.

Most people who ride are nowhere near as good as there bikes are anyway.

It's one of the best selling models in the world... ever... I don't really listen to other people too well, I'm too busy listening to my beautiful exhaust notes...

The 883's fine. People who knock other people's bikes are ususally trying to make themselves feel better for their own inadequacies.
Yea, that or their just,,,,, STUPID!

Any Sportie is a great bike. Anyone that knocks your bike is fighting words as far as I'm concerned. Just tell them to get out of their automatic BMW cars and ride one sometime. If they could stay on it.

A Sportie is a girl's bike. Do youown a bike? Do you have your MC license? Then shut the &^*& up!

Some cagers really **** me off!

It's all a pissing match. I rode a 900 sporty for 18 years(they were called that before the 883) before I traded for an Electra Glide. Had I seen the Nightster (crappy name) sooner, I would be riding it now. 883's are not just for new riders, it's what a sportster was since 1957.
