Antbody ever hear of, see, own, ride one of these things. I gotta say the more I look at it the more I really really want to build one of these things. It looks like pure fun to ride and I got a chit load of trails all over the place this thing would be perfect for. I already got the bike for it, '02 1200C. I haven't ridden it for a while since I got it set up for my wife it's just not comfortable to ride for more that 15 minutes or so and my wife don't ride it. Was on the verge of selling it but might just keep it around and turn it into a very long term project.
I'm looking at hard packed dirt road type stuff, I live at the base of the sierras and they have tons of semi maintained fire access roads all over the place up in the mountains.
Here is the link to Jim Carducci's build thread on ADV Rider. It is a very long thread; but, is well worth the read. IMHO it is the best build thread I have ever followed.
There are way too many assumptions made concerning the sportster in regard to off road riding. All are speculative; and based soley on suspect anecdote. With every platform there will be trade offs. However, the sportster platform is unequivocally the most versatile. There isn't much it can't do if set up properly. Carducci's SC3 puts a lot miles between many of those myths.
