Default Gross sound...

So, installed a set of Short Shots on my 07 Nightster and the bike sounded amazing. Installed a Joker Machine AC, and now it sounds pingy and crappy. It is not deep throaty sound at all anymore. What are my options? I hate the look of the ham can…

I have a set of Xieds on the way from DK, will that help at all?

Don't know why everyone mostly chooses those "Short Shots" for exhaust on the Sporty, so many options out there why be the same as everyone else? So many options that will work better, sound better and provide you with better performance. They look good don't get me wrong but I seriously believe that the "Short Shots" are played out... In regards to your issue "pingy" noise... That's an issue that someone else have to chime in..The stock Air Cleaner SUCKS!

I look at the SS issue like this, I really like the look, wanted it on my bike, so I bought them. I personally don't care how many people on the internet have the same exhaust as me. I like my bike, I make changes for me.

The stock air cleaner does suck, thats why I changed it to a different one.

What do you mean by "pingy" and "crappy?" Running lean? What do your plugs look like?

The old ham can has been a prominent characteristic of Sporty's for years. I like them, but I can see how a smaller ac shows more engine details.

I will check the plugs tomorrow, thanks.

I really like seeing more of the engine, however I will go back to a larger one if it really is that bad.

As for the sound, its sort of like…raspy now, compared to how the Short Shots made it sound. I had LOADS of compliments on how great it sounded before switching the AC.

Now most of my friends agree, pretty crappy sound. I wonder if the Xieds will help, I know they will help with the lean part of it.

You are now hearing all the noise the stock intake muffles. The main purpose of the intake is not to suck in air, it is to reduce as much intake noise while getting a little bit of air to the engine.

wait a minute, you changed the exhaust & the Air cleaner but you haven't installed Xied or done stage 1, nothing? That's probably why it's running crappy & making noise. You can change one without doing anything about AFR (ecm ) but not both at same time. Get those Xied on run around 15 min should straighten out but stage 1 would still help with idle, rev limit, timing & afr

Sound is such a subjective thing...pingy and crappy.

Regarding pinging, you are too lean. The XiED's will fix that.

Short Shots have a tendency to to be a bit tinny and sharp sounding. When you had the stock air cleaner on it was restricting the flow of air, so you were not getting the full effect of the SS's. One way to deepen the tone of the SS's is to install some TTI W118's. Not only will it deepen the tone a bit, it will give a good bump in low and mid range power.

More general noise... (crappy?) the open element of the air cleaner produces a fair amount of noise...not sure if that is part of what you are hearing that you don't like.

On these new efi bikes, you cannot check plugs like you used to. There are more than a few threads on the proper way of checking plug color on EFI HD's, but the short of it is, you gotta be running for more than a few minutes at highway speed, then shut the engine off while at highway speed, coast to the side of the road and check the plugs then.

+1 on that! You do what you like and others can do what they like!

Regarding the mods you've done I really think that you should get a tuner! The bike is probably running really lean right now. Don't want you to mess up a fine bike like yours!
