Regarding pinging, you are too lean. The XiED's will fix that.

Short Shots have a tendency to to be a bit tinny and sharp sounding. When you had the stock air cleaner on it was restricting the flow of air, so you were not getting the full effect of the SS's. One way to deepen the tone of the SS's is to install some TTI W118's. Not only will it deepen the tone a bit, it will give a good bump in low and mid range power.

More general noise... (crappy?) the open element of the air cleaner produces a fair amount of noise...not sure if that is part of what you are hearing that you don't like.

On these new efi bikes, you cannot check plugs like you used to. There are more than a few threads on the proper way of checking plug color on EFI HD's, but the short of it is, you gotta be running for more than a few minutes at highway speed, then shut the engine off while at highway speed, coast to the side of the road and check the plugs then.
I've got the short shots on my 48 as well and I've been looking at the TT inserts. I've got an Arlen Ness stage 1 AC on and my pipes actually sounds real nice. Deep and throaty but I could use the extra power bump in low/mid range. I assume that with my setup and with the TT inserts installed I'd still be getting an even deeper tone?
I just might order me some TTs today (if I can get over the fact that the shipping cost is twice the amount of the TTs)

Yes, the TTI's will deepen the tone some.

Email Dawn at Support@DKCustomProducts.com to see if she can help with the shipping costs.

I have a set of Xieds on the way from DK, will that help at all?
Your only option, though late into the game, is to get edjumincated & informed, before you waste more of your hard earned $$ on stupid $hit.

Your bike running like poop is because it's running lean as hell.

If your intention is to just sound cool then go ahead and buy the XiED's and stop reading. However, if your intention is more than sounding cool, read on.

Your bike already runs lean from the factory because the MoCo has to manufacture bikes that meet environmental numbers for emissions, and unfortunately that means that due to this lean factor your engine will run hotter than it needs to as will the exhaust. Oh what to do.

As a rule of thumb, you can add one or the other of free flowing exhaust or free flowing intake, without affecting this already existing factory lean condition. Ie., if you change out just the intake, there will be a bootleneck existing at the exhaust, and if you change out just the exhaust, a bottleneck will still exist at the intake. All's good. The only time a problem is created is when you change out BOTH intake & exhaust, as this will create an even GREATER lean condition, which if left unchecked will lead to unnecessary heat and premature damage to the rotating components of your engine. wtf oVeR.

This is where a good tuner comes in. Power Commander, HD SERT, Power Vision. With the tuner a custom MAP can be utilized to program your ECM to places it's never been and would never have been able to go left to it's own devices. Not only is the factory lean condition eliminated, but you get better performance, more power, quicker acceleration, less or no decell popping, and with some depending on type, the ability to create your own MAP's via a "auto tune" scheme ["basic," included with the PV tuner, or "pro" versions with wide band 0˛ sensors to go along with the PV tuner]. It's damn near almost as good as a two hour dyno & tech session.

Now, since you're here asking what to do, that means you need to get educated. Start looking up the various tuners available for the HD Sportsters and check into each ones strengths and weaknessess, learn what and what they won't do, and learn how they operate and why they work. Once you understand the aformentioned you should be able to then make a decision based on your newfound knowledge [and of course your pocketbook...you can take your time and save your $$ for what you really want instead of buying on impulse, which always seems regrettable] on which direction to travel.

Wanna' just sound cool? Buy the XiED's ['poser, j/k, LOL].

Wanna' have a bike running pretty damn close to it's potential and have the knowledge to share with others on how to make their bikes sound great and rip *** like yours? Get educated and BUY A TUNER.

I highly recommend the Power Vision tuner by Dynojet. Buy it from FuelMoto and get twice the factory warranty, lifetime support, free MAP's, and the proper MAP already installed on the PV for your current setup. Oh sure it's pricey, but anything worth a $hit usually is!

Ta-ta-ta-ta-TUNER!!

Honestly, I can't even hate. That not only was funny, but informative. lol I really did enjoy the little jabs.

Thanks for taking the time to school a newbie, I HONESTLY do appreciate it.

Im my defence, I picked up an exhaust for a better sounding bike. It sounded like a sewing machine with stock pipes. I then added the AC because I got a deal but admittedly had no idea what I was getting into...now I know.

Honestly, thanks. I will look into picking up a Power Vision.
