Shock bolts/proper length?

Shock bolts/proper length?
Good evening Riders;
I took the old saddlebags off of my 2000 xl1200 C and I had to remove the top shock bolts in order to get the saddlebag off. Now I have to replace the two top shock bolts as they are too long to use now. I know they are grade 8 and the top of the shock end to end is an inch and one quarter. To confirm....... is it a half inch course thread? And how long of a bolt should I get? Or how much of the bolt should go into the bike?
