I have just fitted some new handlebars onto my sportster.
Went to start her up, and everything went great - but as I was about to hit start I noticed some smoke, so quickly turned the ignition off and took the key out.
The throttle cable was 1,000 degrees and smoking!
I have no clue as to why this is - but don't really want to try starting the bike again until I know what it could be.
I've already tried googling, but didn't find anything.
Sounds like you have some electric current shorting out through your cable. Are you sure you did not pinch or sever some wires when switching out handlebars? A very unfortunate but all too common problem because of the stupid design of the wiring and the idiotic dimpled bar design.
You've got a short in your handlebar wiring and as with any flow of electricity, it's taking the easiest path to ground, which in this case appears to be through the throttle cable.
