Default Tacho installing problem ...

Hi to all

Bought a new speedometer and tachometer (separate instruments)

with spare parts numbers 67049-04B and 67416-08 and with those two I wanted to replace my broke speedometer on my sportster xl883L 2007

The cable and contact are a fit but ... the speedo works just fine but the tacho lights up and thats it .... it does not react at all .

I bought the parts from eBay with no instructions how to install so I just plugged it in , should I have done something before ? connecting it to the data link or ... ?

Never done this before so any help would be appreciated !
Thanks in advance

yeah, you probably hooked up the wrong data line to the tach,, when I did mine I think directions said hook up to green data wire and then there was 2 green wires,, I hooked to wrong one and fried the tach, luckily I got it for like $12....and then I got another one for like $20 and got it to work...I got them cheap because they were the old outdated shift gauges.. do a search on ebay for HD shift gauge,, you'll find them,, the problem is though finding any of the housings or mounting plates for them, I had to really search for those and I think it costs me like $75 for those 2 pieces.

My bike is an 06 so it may be different than yours..

you can download instruction sheets for all accessories on HD's website,.,.that may help you..

also, why didn't you get the new Speedo/ Tach combo unit from HD? yeah it's $309 but it's a really, really nice piece with color changing and all that and it even has a gear indicator and fuel gauge that would work on your 2007.... plus it shouldn't fog up like the old speedos. plus it would be an easy install, just plug it in and done...plus you wouldn't have to buy any mounting hardware.

Thank you Sporty for your reply

The two instruments I bought are totally new and never mounted , original harley and they came complete with cable and leds , the contact is exactly the same as my old one so I assumed it was only to plug in , exactly what I did didnt change anything just plugged it in , the speedo is working great but the tacho only lights up and stays that way , no reaction to rpm .....
Why I didnt buy the new one ...hmmm .... you should see the prices for Harley in switzerland
