Default from cheapest performance mods...

I have a heritage softail that me EX picked out, it was the stile she liked and the backseat was comfortable.... I'm keeping it but I am going to buy a 48 since I can afford it now that she is an EX... cosmetic I can do, I am a good fabricator and I know what I like...

but truth be told, I'm not a mechanic.... so, what is the first performance mod I should get? from cheapest up? most bang for the buck? that sort of thing... thanks guys....

background... I have had several bikes of all makes, a few Harleys and spent 25 years in the Army riding the whole time...

If you haven't rode it already, try it, it might be enough power for you. 1200cc on a lighter bike is powerful enough.

If not, Stage 1, get a good 2-1 exhaust (Patriot Defender or similar), an aircleaner (Hammer Perf.) and a tuner of some sort (Powervision).

Otherwise, Head-porting (Hammer Perf.) , Cams (Hammer Perf.) LOL

More? 1250 kit (Hammer Perf. Preferably done with the Head-Porting).

Still not good enough for you? (ALthough 1250 + heads + cams should be plenty enough) 88" or 90" + heads, cams and stuff.. This is gonna cost you.. :P

Congrats on your upcoming 48 purchase!

The least expensive, and most increase in power for $ spent is modding your stock exhaust with Thunder Torque Inserts. You can check out the dyno charts at that link.

The next thing to do, (or instead of the above) is what is called a Stage 1

1. Get a free flowing intake (air cleaner) that let ONLY cool dry air into the engine. Like an Outlaw Hi-Flow 587 or Hi-Flow 425

2. Get a free flowing exhaust- A complete exhaust system or slip-on mufflers. There are MANY to choose from...based on looks, sound, etc. The best performance wise is usually a 2-1 pipe. However, most of them will perform even better with Thunder Torque Inserts installed.

3. Air-Fuel mod to fix the "too lean from the factory" settings (which will be even leaner after you do #1 & 2 above). The least expensive is the XiED family of products. You can see details on them HERE.
If you want to go with a full featured tuner (not inexpensive), I don't think you can do better than a PowerVision from FuelMoto.

Agreed. Stage 1. The biggest constraint in modern engines are restrictive intakes and exhausts. Everything else gets more expensive.

DK has a good rep on here. I've seen him stand by his products, and he is quite the fellow rider as well.
