Ohh, and how do you know the battery is good..have it load tested...just because the lights come on bright does not mean it is good...also check the main feed where the battery + goes to the fuses and connects to the battery....you problem too me does not sound like a bad ground (but I have been wrong before) ..it sound more like a corroded + wire or dirty contacts some where that is not allowing enough current to flow..

Well I just did what you said and sprayed inside the ignition barrel and turned the key on and off several times, funny thing is, when I jiggle the key a bit in the 'on' position all the electrics go off so maybe it's a sure bet the ignition needs replacing?

Well I ordered a new ignition and fitted it today and hey presto my bike is up and running again.
Hope this helps anyone else that may be suffering from this type of problem.

If still no joy, disconnect and clean each "negative ground" connection. How old is the battery? Try a battery "Optimate" type of charger as that will tell you if the battery is holding a charge. If the battery is more than 3 year sold change it. Get a new AGM gel acid type I have one on my '99 XL which I keep out doors and retired so only use it once or twice a week and been on it 2 winters and no problems ever.
