Alternative Service Advice
I have a few general questions about my 2009 1200 XLN. Any help is much appreciated.
1.) What fuel does everyone run? I've been told both 87 and 91. If possible list details as to why you chose the type. What are the benefits, and possible risks?
2.) Aside from the Harley oil filter, oil, and primary chaincase lubricant what other alternatives are available? I've read some riders go with 20/50 automobile oil, or 20/50 diesel oil.
3.) How many miles before changing for the following?
- Oil
- primary chaincase lubricant
- belt
- spark plugs
- air filter
- tires
- brakes
- battery
2) Whale oil is the most renewable so use that. It is a Japanese product, so it is a wishy washy thing for most Harley owners to buy it.
3) 5K
5K
When your waist gets too big for the one you have
50k
When dirty
When they pop
When you can't stop any more
When no lights turn on in acc key position
4) Pull the trigger and read your manual. Soon you will have Harley oil running in your veins and every other cliché you can think of.
Oil is one of the most frequent topics on the internet, something I steer clear of. There are so many prejudices and misguided aspects of the subject that you should choose those that you prefer! Factory stuff is fine and the savings to made using other brands are not enough to waste time on IMHO!
As for your #4, spend a little time in here reading new and recent posts - it can become addictive, so be warned!
