So, I've been looking into putting some aftermarket exhausts on my
'14 Iron. I've boiled it down to either short shots or big radius. I called the local HD dealer today and asked about price, tuning, if I needed a fuel pak, etc. The parts guy told me that any aftermarket exhaust would void my warranty. This seems odd since the pipes would be ordered, installed, and the bike tuned by an HD shop. Just wondering if you guys know any more. I haven't had a chance to look in my owner's manual or at my warranty yet because I'm at work. Has anyone ran into this issue?
I find this funny as I just put a deposit on a 2013 48 with 250 miles and it has the V&H short shots, SE stage 1 AC and the SE programmer and it has the factory warranty till June '15...got it in writing!
I asked specifically about my warranty before I put my V&H Twin Slash Rounds on. The service manager at House of Thunder (Morgan Hill, CA) gave an emphatic NO, this will not void any part of your warranty.
There's tons of post about HD vs Warranty. They have to associate the warranty repair was caused by your add on. Say you put on exhaust and your fuel pump quits. There's no way in hell it could of caused it. Now if our bike goes lean and burns a slug they might have a case. Do some research and do the work yourself. First thing is buy the service manual. The tuner, exhaust, and A/C are just bolt on. Enjoy your sporty.
I had the Screamin' Eagle slip ones put on it when I bought it. Should have just went with the V&H's to start with. Buy once cry once I guess. The more I talk to other Harley owners and the more I talk to the HD dealers, the more I find myself thinking that other than buying a bike, there is no real reason to deal with them. I just don't understand why they have to be shady! I had an R6 before my Iron and dealt with the Yamaha dealer on several occasions and it was easy breezy! They even gave me free dyno time after their tech remapped my bike and put on sprockets and Scorpion race exhausts. I'm just gonna do the work myself and keep my fingers crossed that it doesn't ever need any warranty work done.
Have Short Shots on my 14 1200C. Installed by my dealer and still have my warranty. The parts guy is blowing smoke. Talk to the service dept., store manager, or find a different dealer.
I'd say it's the dyno tune they are concerned with, not the exhaust. Many dealers don't want themselves or HD responsible for possible damage. Those pulls can be very hard on a motorcycle. Most make it but some don't. I've heard the horror stories about seals blowing out then POOF!
Has anyone had a dealer ask if your motorcycle has any remaining factory or third party warranty before taking it in to install a tuner? I have. To me it's just part of the game. I'd rather have it blow on a dyno in a Harley Dealership that 200 or more miles from home. Lol
