Default Painting the Iron 883 headlight cover

Hi Everyone -

I am looking to paint the silver part of the Iron 883 headlight cover. I have never done something like this before, but I think it should be fairly simple. I was going to start off wet sanding with 800 grit (maybe higher) sandpaper, prime, than rattlecan with John Deere blitz black.

Just curious to see if anyone has done this and if they had any tips or tricks they could share. Thanks as always for the help!

if you mean the trim around the light, iv done this.
i actually done it on my friends the other day.
imo you dont need to wet sand, you dont need any higher either, think i used 300 grit.
you want to scuff up the surface. give the primer something to hold onto.
dont worry too much about gettin any deep scratches in it. i doubt it would cause anything like that and any minor scratches you get should get filled in by the primer.

i done first coat VERY light.
wait 15 mins
then a full coat, not too heavy though.
another 15 mins then another coat.
give it some more if you want. i only gave it 2 or 3 coats of primer.
then i gave it 24 hours for the primer to set correctly and the thinner and other stuff to evaporate.
then start on your black.
spray, wait 15 mins
repeat until your happy with the result.
think i put about 4 or 5 coats of black on it.
give it at least 24 hours before putting it back on the bike.

also not really sure what John Deere blitz black is.
if my guess of being matte black is correct then it is no different than any other color.
although you should know that the paint will look shiny and glossy when it first hits the surface, but as it drys it will start to look matt.

good luck

my last tip is dont worry about it too much.
its only paint, even if you mess it up, just sand it back down and start again

Thanks for the tips! Funny thing is I got the idea of painting it after seeing your posts. I am pretty much shamelessly copying many of the modes you did to your bike! Love the look.

Thanks again.
