My bike is an 05 1200c with stock pipes ac & jets. It has about 2k miles on it now -- although I bougt it used a few months ago and have only put about 500 or so on myself. I will be doing pipes soon.
I've put 10K miles on an 06 883C in the last 14 months with stock A/C, jetting and exhaust. There's times when I think about changing pipes, but I'm happy with the power and the gas mileage, so I spend (all) my money on other parts
I think most people change their pipes for the sound more so than for performance. When it comes to the A/C and rejet part you have to understand that the factory de-tunes the engine to meet manufactures EPA requirements. Installing a higher flow A/C and rejetting is really just tuning the engine to obtain its stock potential. Also the stock engine runs lean which is not good for the motor long term. Better to be a little on the rich side vs alittle lean.
My 06 1200c has about 2200 miles on it now. I have no interest in doing any stage 1 upgrade. If the bike came like that from the factory it should not need to be messed with IMO. Does the EPA require de-tuning of EFI HD bikes or just the carburated ones? Now you have me a little curious.

Yes, EFI is an effiecient way to de-tune a motor to meet the EPA req.'s. That is why HD went to EFI. This isn't just Harleys, it's all motor vehicles. Because it came from the factory that way doesn't mean it's right in terms of optimun engine performance. And by performance I don't mean just speed. A factory engine (to meet EPA) runs lean. Running lean means higher engine temperatures. Higher temps mean more wear on the engine. They are forced to de-tune the motors to meet EPA requirements for vehicles as "shipped from the factory". Once they leave the factory it's up to you.
Re-tune & the motor rus better & lives longer
I had plans for pipes and such before I got mine. Now that I have ridden it quite a bit I have decided it's just fine the way it is. It starts great, hastremendous power, sounds good with the stock pipes and looks great, I don't want to change anything. I may change my mind in the future but for now it does everything it was suposed to do, in factbeyond my expectations.
4,500 miles on my 06 love the milage I just removed my baffles I will be getting new pipes this summer not to happy with the sound. At first it sounded neat now sounds cheap.
I have only put pipes, V&H slipons, and it actually starts easier than with the stock pipes, and it warms up quicker. I've got about 3700 miles on mine.I will do the SE a/c and rejet, just havent had the time to tear into it.
