Ok, update time.

I checked out both bikes today, but sadly couldn't ride either. The 2009 had a bum battery and the 2007 was paranoid about insurance (red flag?) They are both in same good garaged condition, same paint, all stock, etc.. Just looking at them the only thing I spotted was that the 2009 will need new tires.

When we talked price the 2007 wants $6,000; and the 2009 is firmly set at $7,000.

What do y'all think?

I am leaning toward the 2007 just for more modding money, but I can't test ride. The 2009 will let me ride it after they replace the battery.

Based on your last post, go with the 2007. I paid $3500 for my 2007 883 Custom with 11,750 miles on it back in March.
See if the seller will drop the price some. Don't act over excited about the bike when dealing.
As for a test ride, leave a friend with the cash with the seller as you test it out.
I always show up with helmets, boots, gloves, and a amour riding jacket.
Show the seller my current bike policy( 3 bike VINS listed) and have never been refused a test ride outside a used bike dealer.
Good luck on the deal.

The OP said both bikes were well maintained, so why should one break down over the other? Sportys are durable machines.
Heaven forbid he has to make a insurance claim, but the best value bike will make it easier for the OP to replace it.
I've been buying bikes since 1979 and have yet to loose money on a used bike.

@Guzzi: Doing something for a long period of time does not make it a best practice. It just means you did something for a long time.

@OP: A 2007 @ 6000 is an okay deal. I'd offer 4999 and expect to pay 5500. Reasoning: I bought my 07 883 for 4500 with 187 miles. Added a dealer installed 1200 kit and was still under 6000.

The 2009 I'd offer 5550 and walk away. Let him call you back. 10k miles is high and you could find a better if you wait. 7000 is too much.

Swing by with a friend and count out 5500 in front of the seller. Greed will take over the sale. You may end up paying 6000 in cash. It's dirty but, it works

The insurance thing is not a red flag. You ain't ridin/driving anything of mine without full coverage. You break it on a "test" drive... you either buy it or I'm filing a claim.

Is this your first bike? Have you taken the safety course? Not letting you ride is not a red flag... I would not do it either... after you buy the bike you can ride it all you want... or owner can ride it in front of you so you see that everything works. But no way would I give test rides to people that I have no clue of their riding abilities.

Alaska prices are certainly higher than everywhere else, that is for sure...

Keep us posted.
