Default Looking for advice on a purchase

Heya guys,

So here is the story. I am looking to buy a Nighster, but up here in Alaska options are limited. My two best bets right now are; a 2007 w/5,225 miles, or a 2009 with 8,500 miles. Other than that they are both stock and have good maintenance records.

My question is: Which bike would you recommend based on the info given?

For some reason the two sides of my brain are fighting. One side says "newer bike", but the other argues "less miles bike".

Hopefully you can help me with your experience and input.

Thank you,
-Tony

I am also in alaska (anchorage) and I know what you mean by not a lot of selection. My advice is to ride both and see which one rides better. Also are they the same price ? Cause that can be a factor. But based on ur info I always like to buy the newer bike. Good luck on ur purchase.

A difference of 3000 miles is really no difference at all.

Just some thoughts:

I think the only real difference between these two years is the ECM location.
That change seems to only make a difference if changing seats or customizing.
There are other minor changes but nothing to the drive train except front axle.

2007 was the first model year, yet very dependable. I recall the only issue was a recall/ TSB on the fuel pump making noise.

I'd agree 3K mileage difference is immaterial, unless you plan to only ride 1000 miles a year.

Do both come with the same maintenance records - no major work/ collisions/ drive belts look good on both?
Paint color make a difference to you?
Tire wear equal?
Alaska...any rust in gas tanks?
Are they the same price?

Alaska, I am stereotyping here...rough roads; may need longer rear shocks...Gas station distances...may need bigger fuel capacity than OEM 3.3 gallons.

Either bike seems OK.
First model year was dependable, higher mileage is an immaterial amount
Only you can decide...condition vs price.

IMHO, newer bike... the mileage difference is negligible...

I would go with the cheaper bike. They are the same.
I like the lower miles over longer period better than higher miles over shorter period.
2007 would be my choice. ( given both ride well)

Go with the older one. Swap all the fluids and plugs, put on new tires. Check the belt.

Give it a wash /degrease. Look for leaks.

Mod it into oblivion.

You haven't mentioned price. Both sound like good bikes, price being the same go for the one with the best resell value. Like you, I had a choice between 2 clean bikes (at the same price.)
One was a 04, the other a 07, both 883 Customs. Went with the 07 because of higher KBB / NADA resell values.

Resale values should always be considered, along with the bikes condition.
The OP said both bikes were well maintained, so why should one break down over the other? Sportys are durable machines.
Heaven forbid he has to make a insurance claim, but the best value bike will make it easier for the OP to replace it.
I've been buying bikes since 1979 and have yet to loose money on a used bike.
