Picked her up and almost made it home. On the side of the road letter her cool down. Got her up to speed on the highway and she would go, backfire and the rpms would zero for a few seconds and no power but then another backfire and she would go fine. Not throwing any codes.
Got it running for a few; still not home. Did the spray around the engine intake with carb cleaner and no change. If she starts, she sputters and dies as soon as I turn the throttle.

Did your mechanic check the stator? The symptoms are pointing to a bad stator.

Mech didn't. Just talked to a HD Tech back Stateside and he says points to ignition module. I'll run voltages tomorrow to check charge as well as heat test the pickup.
Thank you everyone for your help. I'll let you know how it turns out.
The ignition module can be a difficult to identify. Often they become intermittent. Zero the RPM on the tach does point to the module failing.
After replacing everything else in the ignition circuit and still having stalling and the ability to restart and run again for a while I borrowed a module and discovered it ran perfect with a good used substitute. That convinced me it was in need of a new module. Sure did appreciate the person loaning me a good working one for the test.
If you can replace with a nice tunable aftermarket module you'll find it performs a lot better than stock.
hold a hair dryer on the ignition module with the bike running for about 5-10 minutes, all the while intermittently revving the engine and as you start to create load on the module ie revving the engine it should sputter an sound like its going to die -- then this is your problem
The fact that you were not getting a spark at the plug after that initial one also points that its an ignition problem.
try the hair dryer a little longer , and also pick up a can of compressed air
keyboard duster stuff and spray it on the module it will cool it off
If it fires right back up, that's your problem.
The ignition module is prone to failure due to excessive heat
Final update. Got the ignition module installed last night and the scoot runs great! Will order an after market one today but this is working for now. Any suggestions on an aftermarket module? I'm looking at the Dyna and since I'm in Japan I have to be choosy where I order from.
