Hi All, I am considering an 883 custom, it will be around the 2006/7 year and was wondering if there is any problem areas I should look out for, improvements to make etc when veiwing one to buy. Also, how long do the drive belts last for? Many thanks, Gary
Hi Gary, which Cambridge are you in? I went past the original one only this morning! Improvements are so personal, you'll have to decide that yourself. Don't look at a bike for what it could be, but what it is! When you buy, keep your cash in the bank and ride it for a while, before making any changes, as you may change your mind pdq.
Belts? They can last round the clock, but be aware that Sporty owners seem to have more problems with breaking them that big twin owners. That may be down to neglect or a reluctance to buy the factory tension tool.
Budget for buying one of them. Also ask the seller for owners and service manuals, just in case he has them, otherwise budget for buying the factory service manual as well. Check tyre dates, as if a bike is still on it's original ones they have reached the end of their life, so budget for them too. Ask when it was last serviced, by whom and ask to see the paperwork.
One big difference to keep in mind with those years is that a 2007 will be fuel injected, and the 2006 (and older) will have a carb. There are advantages to both.
Thanks for the info guys, i will bear that all in mind. Hi Graham, yes it was the one I imagine you went past. I am just up the A10 a bit, 4 miles south of Ely.
The EFI 883 got a cam upgrade and you will notice the difference. EFI is also much easier to start. Coldest day the roads were clear last winter was 14F, and I rode. Started on first crank. EFI is so much easier.

I had a trip out to Black Bear at Newmarket. Could have popped in for a cuppa!!!!
Next time you go give me a shout, We are on a nice back road ride if you turn off the A14 at Huntingdon toward Erith and then on to Newmarket. I just noticed you have a MG ZT, I had one a couple of years back but not lucky enough to have the awesome V8. do you use the 75 & ZT forum?
After reading up on these bikes, it seems that a stage 1 tune is a common upgrade, is it something I should budget for when buying, does it make a great deal of difference and is it worth spending the extra cash on?
