It isn't essential IMHO! There are two reasons for going to a stage 1: noise; and improved performance. I haven't modified my 2011 SuperLow at all and if I ever do it will be with a 1250cc kit, which will give it a serious kick up the backside. Mine makes quite enough noise thanks and also runs very well and rides well. By contrast my 2007 Buell uses an earlier version of EFI and does need help to improve the way it runs.

I don't think you should budget for doing a stage 1 myself. A dealer will often offer a quite expensive package, to do it right on a new bike. Your new bike will be fine as stock, so ride and enjoy and let the tuning bug develop in its own time. No need to rush old chap. Also browse around in here, where you will come across all manner of hints and tips, a few of which are worth giving serious thought to!

Hi Graham, thanks for the reply.I suppose it makes sense, as you say, to get the bike and ride it for a while to see if I think it needs any improvements. The problem with all this research Im doing is it is giving me too many ideas.

Gary, such is the Pandora's Box of Harley ownership! One irresistible treat leads to another - and........

There is also a perceived 'need' to modify the darned things before the paint dries, which we over here really should resist, if only for the added burden of import duties and higher taxes. Also once riding, your thoughts may lead to other priorities, such as rider comfort. Having said that, I have just taken time out from browsing US Ebay......
