replaced the starter on my sportster around 2 weeks ago and everything has been fine. went to start up the bike today, starter spun for a bit then stopped...i thought maybe i let off the start button a bit early and thought nothing of it. fired up right away the second time.
got to my destination and i see lots of smoke as soon as i park. took a look and the positive terminal on the solenoid keeps on sparking and eventually catches flame!! i run to get some water and put it out, stuff looks pretty melted. havent had a chance to look at it closely yet but im assuming maybe a loose connection somewhere, or a short?? maybe the starter is a defective unit?? any ideas? also, i have a weak stator if that matters.
lol im actually very lucky to have had access to water. i actually tried spitting on it to put it out...didnt work so well. the fire looked like it was going to be out of control.
anyways, took a closer look at it...sparks fly when i push on the battery cable in the right direction. when i hit the start button, tiny sparks fly as well. starter still works and bike still starts. I'm at my girlfriends house so I will have to come back with tools.
