All,
Currently I ride a 2000 XVS1100 Classic, but I am wanting to make the jump to HD... I have been riding for a number of years.
I have come across a 97 1200 Custom that seems pretty much perfect for me.
That being said, I have been riding a Star for a number of years, so that is what I know... Are there any pitfalls with the 97 1200 Custom? Anything I should look for or listen for?
Nothing in particular stands out about that model year. Just check out all the normal stuff like you would for any other bike. Sportys are pretty reliable, especially when maintained. Ask for maintenance records!

Thanks in advance...
My first bike was a 97 1200 custom. She was a beaut! Nimble and fast! The Tires were dry rot and she needed the fluids changed but she ran like a dream. To bad that guy pulled out in front of me and ended her life... Now I got an 04 Sporty. You will love that bike.
I've owned several Star motorcycles, including the XVS1100, and I recently bought the 1200T Sportster Superlow. I love it, compared to the Stars. The Stars were nice bikes, but the Sporty is a motorcycle! Nimble, fast, and fits me very well (5'6 with 29" inseam). I think you'll be very happy with the Sporty.
You didn't specify "fat tire" but that version of the 1200C started as a half year 2011 model. I always use 2012 when looking up parts for my 2011. I think the 2011.5 through 2013 are the same, 2014 starts the next round of changes.
