Default odometer not working

ok I have a 1996 XL1200 and my battery went dead. I removed the battery, charged it, put it back in. Noticed tonight that my odometer isn't showing. I can reset the trip and it will show 0000.00. All lights, horn, and etc..work fine. With the bike started and in N, the speedo will move around for no reason. It will not reset below Zero, even with the bike off it sits at about 5mph. odometer doesn't work while off or running. Any ideas? I checked everything I could think of. No wire issues that I can see. I even disconnected the battery to do a reset. First with just ground off for 30-45 sec. no change, then removed the battery again completely for about 5 mins. No change, so I'm lost now. And wishing I didn't buy a used bike.

My speedo quit working, not the same thing as what is happening to you but my issues were because of a faulty VSS.

clean your speed sensor. i believe you have one on this year bike. it should be on top of the trans case close to the starter. I allen bolt hold it in. If its not that you have me stumped.

Update....took the bike for a ride. As before all lights work, even the gauge back light works fine. If I set the speedo in trip mode, in gear, it starts to climb in numbers. The speedo needle just keeps sweeping around. It acts as if it's in a diagnostic mode. When I stop the trip stops, when I move any it moves. My tach is fine, it shifts fine, it idles a little ruff. So I'm wondering if the battery isn't putting out enough? But everything seems to work fine. One of the four fuse/breakers has a crack across the one side. If your on the left side of the bike, seat off, the first fuse/breaker is the one. I checked all wires, and harness and they're fine. I can also restart the bike with no problems. So bad cell in battery, f'ed speedo, or something else? I wish it could just give me a code like my car.

Check this sticky to look at codes: https://www.hdforums.com/forum/sport...tructions.html

The Speedo gets it's AC from the accessory fuse wich also powers turn signals and break lights. I'd say the AC part of it is fine. Speed sensor sounds like a great place to start. I'm not sure but doesn't the Speedo get it's speed digitally? If so the sensor just might need some light cleaning.

The speed sensor (VSS) is unlikely to be the problem, it either does or doesn't generate a set of pulses. Since the speedo needle doesn't go to zero when the bike is shut off, a VSS problem is unlikely.

The battery doesn't drive the electrical system when the bike is running, the stator and regulator do. Check the battery voltage with the bike running at a fast idle (~1500RPM), it should be 13.8-14.8 VDC. Use a digital volt meter.

Fix the obvious problems, whether you think it's related or not.

The bike operates on DC, not AC.

The problem is likely a defective speedo unit or remotely possible, a bad electrical connection in the speedo harness wiring.

Thanks charley. I'm going to get a new meter today, since my old one has seen better days. I'm also just going to replace the breaker, since I don't know if its bad or not. so your saying if it doesn't show 13.8 -14.8v its the stator or regulator then? If all shows correct, bad speedo? if im reading this correctly.

Basically, yes.
You didn't say anything about the battery's condition or age when you first said it was dead. I doubt it's related to your speedo issue, but chasing electrical problems when you have a bad battery or charging system, often leads to wasted time and money.
