What have you got ... what do you want to achieve ... why are you considering do it? Is it just an idyl muse?

Harley built one and called it the Superglide.

You can go big bore in an Sportster engine to 88, 90, 103 inch and save yourself a lot of hassle.

You might need to consider a better pair of brakes though.

well i love my bike, been through alot (99 sporty hugger) so i want to keep this bike. engines getting tired, wanted to do an S&S replica vintage, probably their pan, possibly the shovel or knuck though. i want that old school look, with out shortcuts, with hardcore power in a bike that i have come to love.

im prepared to go hardtail if need be, also thought maybe instead do one of those softail conversions. figured while im chopping frame id make adjustments to fit the new motor. but its impossible to find dimensions for the panhead and idk anyone who has one

Well, the cheap and easy way is to

Cut the headstock and VIN number off your bike.

Buy a Paughco swingarm frame and cut the headstock off it.

Weld the headstock and VIN number from your bike onto it.

That's basically what you are talking about doing.

Salvage as many parts from the old bike as you can and bolt them on, e.g. forks, wheel, tanks etc. Make workshop parts, furniture etc out the rest.

OK, so you are motivated by sentimental attachment for your old bike here ... that's a separate issue.

But, most important, wait until the end of the riding season before you start. Go out and enjoy yourself in the meanwhile.

I don't believe it's possible to put a big twin in a Sportster frame....I mean, you can hack it to pieces and probably eventually get it in there, but it'll be a piece of junk and won't even remotely resemble the bike that you've "been through so much with".

Just rebuild the Sportster engine and do a big bore on it and you'll have a much better motorcycle.

There's just really no point in doing it....As was said before, That's why they built the Superglide.

Why not just buy an older FX model, pretty much the same thing.

Well the best way to achieve all your goals is an S&S sporty motor. It only takes a little frame modding. You will need to put a little clearance in the top tube for the rear rocker cover to clear. Lots of information on this on the web and in other forums.

fyi... The Superglide is not a big twin in a Sportster frame. The only commomality between the two was/is the narrow Sportster front end.

Go with a big bore kit...

Lot of problems with a big twin; wider, longer, taller, and the drive is on the opposite side, at least it is on my friend's Street Bob....
