I recently read a thread on here on replacing the lower rocker box gasket. After I installed the new gasket, the lower rocker box plate would not lay flat to install bolts. The rocker arms are holding the plate up as it hits the push rods. I have removed the rocker arms and shafts and bolted the lower plate on. I have turned the engine so that the push rods are at the lowest position and the rocker arms are still a 1/16" high from allowing the shafts to slide through. The bike is a 2000 Sportster 883.
It's easier when you install the lower cover with the rockers installed. The reason it is pumped up is because the lifters still have oil in them.
If you tighten it down slowly, the oil will leak out of the lifters allowing you to install the cover.
Ideally, this is done before you remove them in the first place. You make sure the pushrods can be spun by hand before you pull the lower cover. Then you don't have to worry about the lifters being pumped up reinstalling the cover.
Thanks for your help. So when I do the second one I should rotate the engine until both pushrods are at their lowest point then let it sit a while before removing the lower rocker cover?
