The reason you run the rear tire on the front reversed is the way the tire is made. The rear tire is designed with layers in direction to be strongest when accelerating. A front tire is just the opposite. It needs to be strongest when braking. This is why you reverse a rear tire when running it on the front.

I just mounted up a 140/70-18 Battlax BT46 rear on the front of my bike. So far, so good.

There's a real reason that they make tires designed specifically for motorbikes.
Blanket statement on the subject. The sidecar industry has been running car tires on sidecars and the rear of the bikes for a lng time. With no issues. They in fact do much better.

It makes no sense to me putting tire on backwards. That means when it rains the grooves will push the water towards the center of the tire instead of out towards the edges. On the old bike I ran a Battleax mounted frontwards and it was great. This winter I will be putting a rear tire on the front of my trike and it will be mounted frontwards. While the thing about acceleration strength sounds great I really think it just an old wives tail. Something that sounds possible, but no one really knows....

The rational for mounting a rear tire backwards on the front, has to do with carcass design/strength when braking. You see, a front tire's brakes are STRONGER than that 131"er you're running. This can cause crazy stress on the carcass within the side walls. Stoppies are even worse for the tire. (I should mention, YES, you CAN do a stoppie on an Ultra.) BTDT.
