I took a simple cigarette lighter cord from Wal-mart and/or Autozone and hard wired it to my battery...instant 12v for universally everything. I just grab the charging unit from my truck and charge on the bike. Check out http://www.moccsplace.com/images/harley/acc/acc.htm for some ideas.
+1 and +1
had a cig lighter adapter bought at a auto store and hard wired that to the bat. then taped the crap out of it. its stored in the hole under the seat in front of the battery.
one of the tricks to learn is now that the wire is hard wired in (staying on the bike) is to watch the plug end, the end that goes into the gps. is to learn to keep that dry during times of rain/washing bike. i have corroded one before, by not keeping dry enough
Or, as I posted in the General Chat section, does anyone know why a Zumo harness, which should be waterproof, wouldn't work with the Nuvi model?
Kimbo has to order a hardwire harness anyway, so why not get one that's waterproof to begin with?
Kimbo, if you're meeting up with MB today, see if your Nuvi will plugin and work with his Zumo cable. It should work unless the Zumo cable has some sort of waterproof shroud on the mini USB connector that interferes with plugging it into the Nuvi.
You can go to Wal-Mart and get car accessory kit for an iPod...they have the USB cord, but more importantly, they have a cig lighter attachment with a USB attachment (plug is lighter with a USB hole in the back end). It converts it to 5v.

The Zumo harnesses don't use the USB connector. The Zumo 550 wiring uses a 12v feed to the mount (using a 4 pin connector) and the mount contains the voltage regulator.
Similar arrangement in the 660 (except the wiring harness is permanently connected to the 660 if I am reading the manual right).
True Matt, will bring car mount anyway, Kimbo the mechanic can check it out.

I took the cigarette lighter circuit board, soldered wires for the direct connection, and mounted the whole thing in the nacelle. Used a spare set of wires that are normally used for the front fender tip light, powers on when the ignition is turned on. Works perfectly. I did tape the hell out of the circuit board, and put a little extra silicone in any open spots.
If you have a windshield bag, it's very easy to run a Powerlet cig lighter socket up to it. There's easily accessible switched power in the headlight bucket. Comes in handy for powering the GPS, charging the cell phone, etc.
No matter how you choose to do it, just remember to put a fuse in your + lead. A $2.00 fuse and holder is much cheaper than an electrical fire.....
Will stick with using Maps ... When a retired Old Fart you are never lost anyway ... Bought a GPS but about all it good for is telling me when I missed a turn or saying where I am when have no idea where I am anyway ..
The hardware wiring harness listed for the Nuvi models is not waterproof because the 12V to 5V converter in the cord isn't a sealed unit.
I can't remember the product, but they make a jell substance that is designed to make ciruit boards waterproof. They use them in DIY scuba gear. If I can find it I will post a link. You make a mold and place the circuit board into the mold, pour in the mixed jell and it will harden, sealing the circuit board without damaging its function.
