I posted this up on the General Forum, but here it is for the FL Crew so no one screws up like I almost did.
Hope no one else makes the mistake I almost made. Bought a new Garmin 1490T for myself for Christmas. Alot of the new GPSs have just one connection point, which is a mini USB which is used of data and power. So I bought an extra Mini USB to lighter connection and cut off the male lighter connection and proceeded to hardware it to the bike. Got it all complete and was at the point of turning it on and started double checking all my connections. Got to thinking and decided to crack open the discarded lighter connection and found a circuit board inside the lighter connector. As it turns out the power source to the newer GPSs are 5 volts thru the mini USB. If I would have powered it up I would have fried the new GPS with 12 volts.
you can get a 12 volt to 5 volt reducer at radio shack I have one for my power probe at work because a lot of sensors in a car run on a 5 volt referance signal
Kimbo,
i ran into the same thing when i ran my power for my satellite radio. i had already had the wires hard wired and for some reason i decided to open the lighter adapter and bingo.. i was just minutes away from frying that sucker..
i never would have guessed these things run on only a couple of volts..

OK, so don't keep me in the dark, how did you resolve it. Not having a faring, I want a waterproof harness/stepdown.

I took a simple cigarette lighter cord from Wal-mart and/or Autozone and hard wired it to my battery...instant 12v for universally everything. I just grab the charging unit from my truck and charge on the bike. Check out http://www.moccsplace.com/images/harley/acc/acc.htm for some ideas.
