A bit different here but kinda the same. Many years ago I wanted to change/cancel a life insurance policy. Had till such a date to cancel and get full refund. I was within the time limit and was told I had to wait till the selling agent got back from vacation, well after my "free" day. My response was, "what happens if that agent croaks? I will never be able to change my coverage or anything." They got my point and magically were able to make my changes, (figure your labor), without my agent (mechanic)!

Damn... got me going on insurance. Two weeks ago my wife paid our property insurance in full. YESTEDAY we get a letter (from our agent) statiing the insurance company was going out of business the end of May, and our policy would be cancelled at that time. Wife calls the agent and asked why they forwarded the check to the company even though they knew we were only getting one month's worth of coverage. The response was, well, you'll get a refund for the unused portion (11 months worth) once everything goes through Receivership with the state!!! Could take a year. My wife was pissed, and the agent tells her she has "good news" and can get us another policy for nearly 1,000.00 less than the previous one. The agent was oblivious to the fact that my wife was pissed that we now have to pay twice, she kept saying "I don't know what your problem is, you'll will (eventually) get your refund". My wife told her we were no longer doing business with them. She then called the agent that has our car insurance to get a quote and the agent told my wife that the earliest refunds from Northern Capital Insurance could come would be the end of this year.

Wow, Something like that could be devastating to some folks who are on fixed incomes or living paycheck to paycheck. HO insurance can be quite a chunk, are you gonna get interest on it? I would also think that if it in receivership there would be no guarantees that you will even get it back because they pay all the debt the company owes first and the the lawyers get theirs and then if there is any left you could get yours. Sounds like they really got you bent over and not using any lube at all. Good Luck.

I already told my wife to not expect a full refund.
I worked for a company years ago that went into receivership. They had not been paying the 401k's to the plan administrator for about 6 months. NONE of that got paid to the employees. Only the money held by the administrator was paid out. Fortunately I had not been with the company long enough to be in the plan. That experience was a trip all in itself... the CFO embezzeled 5 million from the company. The CEO / founder's lawyer told him to file for bankruptcy protection. Receiver came in, took a look at the finances and removed the CEO, and installed himself as the head of the company. Next day he met with management (I was a manager) he told us the next day (Wednesday) he was meeting with the creditors and would make them an offer they could not refuse, and he gave us a 90% guarentee he could turn the company around. The day after the creditor meetng (Thursday) he called another meeting and told us he was shutting the company down the next day (Friday). 4000 employees were out out on the streets with Boston police standing at the doors.
Good news, The hold up was that they are still waiting on a shift lever to come in and thats why he did not turn the work order in, because he is technically not finished with it. So he took a piece of pipe and straightened it out enough to ride and they said I can take it and they will just fix the lever when it come in which is fine because I am waiting on saddle bags to. They said give them until about 2 and they will have it all washed up and ready to go. I ask them to be sure and check my tire pressure as it has been sitting for three months. Wooopeeee! On the Road again, I can't wait to get on the road again, Racking up milessss with my Flo ri da crew friends, I can't wait to get on the road again. LET'S RIDE!
