Default My bike problem

Here is a new one that I have never heard of. Many of you know about my oil leak last Saturday that stranded me and required a tow.

One of the cool things about the Road King is that the oil is routed through the highway bars to act as a cooler. It seems to work really well and it adds 1.75 quarts to the capacity. The lines were routed out of a base that goes under the oil filter and went to the left side and straight down next to the engine and were pretty tight without much slack.

The lines were fake Stainless Braided with only a braided cover over them and were resting on top of the Voltage regulator wires and had worn the insulation off both the wires and the braid. The regulator lines had been arcing and actually burned a hole through the oil line and started the leak. The regulator got pulled and the wires had heat shrink applied and the oil line was replaced with real SS braided and rerouted for no rubbing. The install does not look as clean but it should never happen again. Sure am glad it did not cause some major electrical issues. I would say that I am lucky it started leaking in this case.

Good deal Dave! Glad to hear that this was a relatively easy fix.

That sounds like all the makings of a good fire.
Glad that you got it fixed quickly and safely.

Ride safe-

Glad to hear it was fixed and only wound up being a leak and not a fire like Bob said.
Damn half-*** honkeys doin shyt the cheap way is my daily battle with competitors in my trade.

Rebel, good thought on the pump, theres somethin to ask the wrench about JD. Rebel, he has noted in the past, not to touch the highway bars as they do get hot. (shouldn't be touchin another man's "bar" anyhow

Sounds like a good set up Dave, the pump will not work any harder than it normally does, it is mechanical so it doesn't know its pumping any more volume than it normally does, as long as there are no restrictions in the set up. There is a thread on this, remember reading back in 06 or 07.

Rebel, they do get hot to the touch but nothing like a pipe does. You can lay your hand on them without getting blistered but they are uncomfortably hot.

Glad it worked out for you Dave and there was no permanent damage from loss of oil.

Appreciate it Dale, it was only two quarts low which meant that it was almost full normally. I could smell it at first and then I stopped at a stop sign and the smoke was rolling up of off the engine. Scared the crap out of me. It made a good size puddle under it in about 45 seconds or so because it was steady pumping out once the line gave up. I think that it has been seeping for awhile though. The burn was about the size of a dime. Wish I would have kept the line or took a pic.
