Barbara and I towed our bike up there one year. Stayed in Mannasas, Virginia....which is about half hour west of DC. Was on the edge of the Mannasas Civil War Battlefied. That put us pretty close to the Pentagon gathering site for Rolling Thunder, and close enough to ride the Shenadoah Mountains. Meorial Day is her birthday weekend, so I wanted to take her to DC. I haven't heard what her plans are this year...but Rolling Thunder is a 'must-do'....and if your are old enough to remember Vietnam.....the 'Wall' is worth the ride.
If you ride straight through to Arlington Va from Daytona...stopping for gas/slim jims and orange juice.....it is twelve hours. I was stationed at the Pentagon and made the run numerous times.

Thanks Chuck
I am not old enough to remember that war, but as a veteran myself that served during desert storm and shield in the Army I always love to pay my respects to those before and after me that made the ultimate sacrifice. I always try to hit, tomb of the unknown, Jefferson and Lincoln memorials, Arlington , unfortunate that the Washington monument will not be open yet as i have not been up in that in over 20 years.
As for Dan he is old enough to remember and has a special forces brother that served in the war and he knows many of his buddies that did not come home so we will take time at the wall.
This year is my 40th and his 65th and it's something we've both wanted to do and never done, no time like the NOW!
I did Rolling Thunder a couple years ago. Put the bike (and me) on the auto train in Sanford FL. 17hrs later I got off the train (with the bike) in Lorton Virginia, only about 20 miles from D.C. Stayed in DC three days, did the rally..then rode the bike home.. down the skyline drive, BRP.. through NC,SC, GA. and back to Florida.. was a great trip.
I think part of the fun of this trip will be the ***** out run from Daytona up to Washington on Friday, then a nice day to relax and drive around on Sat
from what we hear, the pentagon parking lot is not a great experience, but it is something we want to do none the less
The Pentagon Parking lot is ACRES! And yup....it fills up with bikes. The joys is walking arouind with other veterans...and you see ALL types of people. If you happen upon the guy in the 'tiger cage'...his name is Jerry. Say hi to him. Once the bikes start leaving....especially if you are towards the 'inside' of the parking area.....do not start your bike.....it may take an hour or more to get to your row. Relax....and know you are there to honor the Memorial Day people. The ones that past before. (Wave to the on-lookers along the streets into DC!)
