First of April headed to the Keys. My father is trailering his bike to my house in Eustis (just north of Orlando), then we are riding to the Keys, making Marathon our base. Looking for suggestions on what route to take, and what to see/do on the way.
MapQuest gave me 2 suggestions: turnpike to US 1 and 27 down the middle. i have been down 27 from Clermont to Lake Whales but not past there.
Thanks in advance for any enlightenment you care to share.
Before that I maybe riding to Charleston, SC next Friday.
I have used the Highway 27 route, and it is nice in that the traffic is usually pretty light once you pass Sebring. Just remember that when you leave Belle Glade that it is 57 miles to the next store or building of any sort. Last time down I took Chrome Avenue which goes thru Homestead, and that was a good ride thru the countyside.
I ride 27 all the time... South of Sebring it's a joy to ride it. Take it to the Florida turnpike in Miami. Then head south on the turnpike to Florida City, end of turnpike. Go straight about a mile or so and take a left on Card Sound Road (awesome route). Have a dollar ready to go over the bridge... Great view from top of bridge.

If you do go down Card Sound Road, ya gotta stop at Alabama Jack's.
Cool place and great food.
Also, stop at Robbie's and feed the Tarpon's, and stop and see the real African Queen (from the movie "the African Queen") at the Holiday Inn in Islamorada!
It's a great ride! Trust me, you'll love it!

Chrome is good from 27 to 41 (less than 15 miles) but the the rest of the way to the Keys could be heavy traffic. Other that the traffic its a nice country ride.
If you have the time, top off fuel in Lake Placid, go south on Hwy 27 to Hwy 29. Take that south to Hwy 41, East to Krome Ave, South to US 1. Nice ride thru the Everglades.

I've ridden all those routes.... But not as one whole trip. That would be an awesome ride.
