The wave
At least around here,
2 fingers pointed down is a sign telling you to keep both wheels on the pavement. Frankly, I don't care if you wave, how you wave or if you don't.
I do think we are better off showing the cagers that we are a solid part of the community. Riding in a group is safer than riding alone and waving, I think, might keep some dumbass cagers in check if they understand we have each other's back. But that is just how I roll-again not expecting it from you or anyone else.
I don't know what 'back in the day' is and frankly don't remember any waving in the 80's when I first starting on pavement. I did take time to find what it was and started doing it as well. I have seen some waving like miss america (like polishing an apple) and found it funny but they were at least friendly.
In my chapter it means there's something on the ground and to watch out.....and a few do it as a wave(?) also.I'm glad you don't care what I do, I don't care what you do either. Waving to a fellow biker is just a courtesy. It doesn't have any deep meaning. You don't have to belong to a club or organization to do it. I don't wave 100% of the time, like going into a turn, coming to a stoplight, excellerating from a stoplight or was looking somewhere else at the time.
I do agree about riding in a group.
"Back in the day" means in the past. I started riding 2 wheels in 1959. From that day till now bikers waved to each other. Harley riders may not have waved to non Harley riders, but just about every UJM rider waved to each other - at least in the Chicago area. Maybe they didn't do that in the sticks, I don't know. Thankfully I haven't seen the "Miss America Wave" from any biker - yet - but I guess that could happen - in boys town maybe.
Anyway, keep doing what you're doing, I see that it makes you happy.
It says you're not afraid to be seen waving to a fellow biker.
The other rider could have been looking elsewhere at the time. I have been known to do that on occasion.
Personally when I realize it, I do feel a little bad that I didn't return the wave, but that's life.
Other times I don't wave = at bike rallys, going in to a turn, approaching a stop, leaving a stop, in heavy traffic, at night(duh), and when I'm texting.
Just kidding on that last one.
Doesn't bother me what you do. I will always wave, that's just me. I even wave to scooters. Probably brightened someone's day.
One thing I will not do is do the stupid pointing at the ground wave that everyone seems to be doing these days. Are you too f%$#$@ lazy to get your hand up and wave a normal wave like we did back in the day?? Don't know if your pointing out something in the road or your shoelace is untied.
If someone gives me 'that' stupid wave, I'll jerk my head down real quick like I think they are pointing at a problem with my bike.
Sometimes they'll look and sometimes they'll jerk their hand back up.....
It's not even a wave - it's a point. I don't know when it changed from a wave to a point, but personally I think it's stupid. JMHO
But hey, at least they're acknowledging fellow bikers - it's a start.
I figure the ones that don't wave back are newbies and have just started riding a big boy bike.

I suspect it is a combination of where, and when you began to ride.
Me??? I wave, but ,my fun does not require YOU to return the wave.... nor do I waste a second on whether you waved or not.
From the 70's through the mid-00's I had a sports car of one kind or another... and most sports car drivers will wave to fellow enthusiasts.... of the same make
do what's right for you... screw the warranty, screw the "brotherhood" most folks aren't going to stop to assist you, and darn few will swap out bikes with friends....
It ain't like it used to be
