The wave
Of the wavers among my friends, I have observed the following.
There is the waver of the first kind, similar to encounters of the first kind. As soon as they see a single headlight headed towards them, their hand has relaxed from the grip and they are ready to move long before the other bike has a chance to wave. While there are subgroups of this kind, most move instinctually so that no actual thought makes made it to the brain. Somewhere, hidden in the subconscious, they acknowledged you are riding a motorcycle. I tend to belong to this group, but my brain gets in the way sometimes.
Then I have a friend who is a last minute waver. He waits almost until you are along side and flashes a wave, most often the 2 fingers down, sometimes so quick, you miss it. Sometimes he uses the Shaka sign, but I'll bet few know what it means.
Then there is the guy who is thinking about something else, is frozen to the bars, just farted or for some other important reason, did not really connect that you were a fellow biker, but being that better late than never, he gets that hands out about the time your license plates pass each other. But his heart is in the right place.
I also have a friend, completely the opposite of the first type. He waits until your hand is up, out and fingers extended before making his move. If you don't wave, you don't exist. He is sometimes confused with the better late and never type, but the other rider does get the satisfaction of seeing his hand in his periphery vision before passing on.
Then there is the guy for whom waving is beneath his dignity. He may have done it once, but probably just never waved. He might be too cool, or too beaten up, or just to happy that he is riding to worry about you.
But, if you take anything said on a wave thread on a biker forum seriously, then you probably should not read this post and go read responses from those who think their opinions matters.
I am just waiting til closing.

I bet the rider uses Rain-X for the drool slobber
I suspect it is a combination of where, and when you began to ride.
Me??? I wave, but ,my fun does not require YOU to return the wave.... nor do I waste a second on whether you waved or not.
From the 70's through the mid-00's I had a sports car of one kind or another... and most sports car drivers will wave to fellow enthusiasts.... of the same make
do what's right for you... screw the warranty, screw the "brotherhood" most folks aren't going to stop to assist you, and darn few will swap out bikes with friends....
It ain't like it used to be
Yeah, I've noticed a resistance to that on this board. My buddies and I swap bikes, it's a lot of fun, almost like you get to own multiple bikes.
As far as the wave, that's the first thing I noticed when I moved to New Mexico from Illinois in 1984. Most all of the motorcyclists out here wave to each other, regardless of bike type.
Cheers!
I like what you said... My thoughts exactly, thank you...
Tom
EDIT: When I started riding the first time, it was 25+ years ago. Everyone waved. Didn't matter what you rode. There just wasn't that many of us out there.
