Remember going to Middletown to see the half mile with my father and brothers in the 60's. Gary Nixon was the grand national champion on a Triumph Bonneville. Al Wilcox was the starter ( Airborne Al ). I can remember seeing , Mert Lawwell, Dick Mann,Yvon Duhamel, George Roader, Randy Texter, Chuck,Denny and Larry Palmgren, Steve Morehead to name a few that ran at Middletown. The day Nixon won, Al Wilcox handed him the checker flag, he tucked it under his arm an wheelied the entire length of the track. The crowd went nuts.
Still watching flat track today. Mees is awesome for sure. But so were Scott Parker and Chris Carr , saw them at the mile is Syracuse NY in the 80's. Great times, great riders, lots of great memories.
For some reason Michigan has always fielded a very talented batch of dirt-track racers. Perhaps not as many as California, but undoubtedly more than any state when you consider it on a per capita, or per square mile, basis. But the group that qualified as "the Michigan Mafia" came from a very small part of Michigan, essentially within a 30-mile radius of Flint. Michigan's list of national-caliber racers is impressive. Chet Dygraff, Bart Markel, Rex Beauchamp, Corky Keener, Jay Springsteen, Ted Boody, Randy Goss, Garth Brow and Scott Parker. Among them, they have more National Championship podium finishes than all others combined.
A lot of these boys also ran the Ice circuit and practiced at Potter Lake which wasn't too far from me ... Randy Goss wound up at Cars and Concepts ( Brighton ) and became a NASCAR Crew Chief ... He and his wife were regular customers of mine at the shop
We use to go to the flat track races outside the track at Daytona and I went once at Sturgis. The Daytona races were awesome. They now have them at Valusha Speedway. The Sturgis races were OK. They had one class that had to be handshift bikes. A lot of 1950 bikes.

Hey Larry, do they still have flat track races in Michigan? Have seen a couple many years ago, locally in mid-Michigan, but have not seen any promoted in recent years. I would like to take grandson to some!!
