Because of the pride one feels when he has accomplished something special.
Military life is HARD, especially on a family. For many, the desire to have a family and a more stable life is more important. Life in the military, especially the Corps is demanding, and you give up alot of freedoms to serve. Still, the pride of having done your time, to have TRULY earned your freedoms.....remains. Not everyone who shows up for Marine Corps boot camp makes it. Some get sent home. You have to EARN it......that brings pride.
Are you in the Marines? If not, why? If you were to serve a hitch, your question would already have an answer.

As someone with 31 years of service in the Navy and still going, I think there are a couple trains of thought. I don't wear anything military related, but have immense pride in what I have accomplished, but military service means different things to different people, and I just accept that some like to show their pride and some choose to keep it internal. It's all okay.
i don't think we should be questioning anything a Marine does. As stated above, they live a hard life watching our *** wile we go about doing the things we do. Wile we are riding, they are standing post some were. Making sure we may continue to enjoy this beautiful live we live. And the flag upside down, whats up with that????
Ex Air Force, here, but have a few thoughts. If I were in a bar fight and yelled UP UP And AWAY, I could probably get away real fast as they were holding themselves laughing. But if a Marine (notice no ex) were to yell Semper Fi, I believe that he would most likely get help from a fellow Marine. Oh, I get this feeling from my son, a Marine and having had the pleasure to associate with his fellow Marines on a regular basis. These young men are ALWAYS courteous and willing to help, all ya gotta do is ask. But, I've never seen a one of them START a fight, but I seen them finish one.
As you can well imagine, I am very proud of my children.
