Here are some math equations on the subject

it definitely goes beyond "being comfortable" and "protection from the cold". there are many alternatives to chaps that are lighter, cheaper, and much more effective than chaps. just admit you like wearing the chaps and be done with it.

i suppose i can wear a arabian da shiki in the summertime and be comfortable too, but i don't' want to wear a dress.

*** for me, I will wear chaps. a trip into Montana, with rain one day, heat the next, bugs, and 30 degrees in the mountains. I just wore them the whole trip and stayed dry and comfortable the whole time. When I got home after 3500 miles of bugs, it was nice to just spray them off and not drag them in on my wranglers.

It all started at the YMCA back in 1978 on a hot steamy night........

No it really doesn't go beyond being comfortable to most of us or they would be on all the time. Below 45, chaps, above , no chaps. Very simple & effective. What I don't understand is why you care so much?
