we'll be trailering to Sturgis cause we're all in our 50s and 60s with questionable backs/knees/stamina/etc. Riding 1800 miles straight, sleeping on the ground for a week, then riding back 1800 miles would require a month or better of recovery at this point. But I see your point about stuff close by. There could be other unknown-to-you circumstances at play though.
Guess I'm in real trouble here since my dad and I went to Sturgis by fly and ride a couple of years ago. we flew into Billings, Mt, grabbed the rental bikes cover 1200 miles going Beartooth hwy to Yellowstone, Little bighorn state parket. Sturgis was on the tail end of trip. Seen plenty of roll-up ******* and drunks. then rode back to Billings and flew home. guess we are at the mercy of the internet bikers!
What is up with all these self proclaimed "bikers" putting their bikes on trailers to go to bike weeks? BIKE WEEK not trailer week!!!
What I'm ranting about right now isn't about some long or even out of state bike week. I'm ranting about "bikers" in South Florida trailering to Leesburg!!! WTF???
Were they wearing... HORRORS... a NEW leather jacket too?!
We are all searching for ways to express an identity in an ever increasing field of "motorcycle riders". Yes, I am a psychologist by hobbie(to save myself money on shrink bills)
Sometimes I'll ride...sometimes I'll trailer...either way i don't care what anyone else thinks about how I got there...nor do I care how YOU got there.

I think the main flaw to this line of thinking is that each of us has an "expectation" of what a rally means to each of us. For me, the experiance is riding, camping, and riding some more. I wouldn't trailer if given the choice.
The problem begins if I were to apply that "expectation" to EVERYONE else that goes to the rally. Thus you're not "really plugged in" if you didn't ride there. That's a pretty narrow minded way of thinking. Honestly, and I believe the core of a "true" biker is, live and let live. I want to ride there? Cool... You want to trailer there then ride around? Also Cool... I like a lot of black on my bike, my girl likes a lot of chrome on her bike...good for me...good for her...doesn't make either of us more "true" or more "right" about what someone who rides "should" be. I don't care how you get there...you want to bitch about people who trailer their bikes to a local event...neither is wrong, right, or shouldn't be heard.
So they trailer to an event close to home...big deal. We have folks trailer their bikes to the weekly "bike night"...again, big deal. I ride for me and let everyone else choose what "riding" means to them.
