Default Riding Tip

When riding in stop light traffic:

Coming to a stop, do you stops on the left, right or center of the lane?

Why?

I stop on the left side so I don't have a wheel in the oil or A/C drippings.

For me it depends on the intersection. Since I've heard all the horror stories around here of people getting rear ended while stopped at a light I usually pick a spot where I can get out of the way if the car behind me isn't stopping; so usually to the right or left depending on if I have a spot to go. The other thing I do is always keep my bike in gear at the intersection.

Yup, that. Plus, (as also mentioned) one of the good takeaways from the MSF course that I remember is the keeping the bike in 1st at the light, so you can pop smoke if need be. I keep an eye on the rear when stopped at the light, especially if nobody is behind me initially to see if someone is flying up on me.

They teach you all kinds of goofy **** in that MSF course. When rolling up to stopped traffic, keep your eye on your rear view mirror.. you stop the guy behind you stops. Where you stop depends on the road surface. Stop where you get good footing right and left. Once you're stopped and the guy behind is stopped, you pop it in neutral and have both feet planted on the ground. Be aware of your surroundings. It's not rocket science.

Yes.

No. Do you put your car in neutral? This eliminates your ability to move in a hurry. So the guy behind you stopped? OK, but he's not the only threat.

I stop just left of the center of my lane. I do not ride or stop in the center with the fluids. I also don't leave enough room where some idiot thinks he can share my lane to make a turn right. I am aggressive about my space. I will share lane with some brothers but no idiot will crowd me in my lane or invade my space. Sitting or rolling. Bike's always in gear. I have a escape route planned. I never assume or quit watching everything around me. Been riding over fifty years. OP, I live south of Galveston. I assume CC is Corpus. Damn tourist add to the hazard.

Situational awareness Mr. Bacon.

It only takes a split second to yard in that clutch and clunk it down to first for a fast get away.

A split second you may not have... but, do what you want.
