I got a detachable 18" windshield for my 2009 fatboy and I'm getting a lot of wind buffering and also wind coming up from underneath as well. I rode it out on the freeway and while doing about70mph I placed my left arm across my chest and there was hardly any wind coming from underneath. What can l do to prevent this, l'd appreciate any suggestions.
You're on a motorbike. It's windy and it's usually like that from all directions on different days.
You can get one of those touring bikes with a big plastic fairing and elephant ears for your legs which probably help cut some of the wind but it's not always wind from the front that you feel.
Not much you can do about wind that comes across you from the sides.
I seen a guy this summer on a V-rod touring across Canada with no windshield. I asked him about it and he said this,"There ain,t no wind buffeting at all...just wind".
Start with fork mounted wind deflectors and see if that does the trick. Next, try a re-curve or taller windshield from LRS or a similar vendor. The type of helmet you wear will also make a difference. Good luck!
You're never going to get the wind control that we have on our touring bikes. Best thing is to get a smaller windshield, or no windshield and a FF helmet.
You guys that are saying suck it up or that wind is a normal part of riding a motorcycle HAVE NO CLUE what buffeting is...Buffeting is not the same as being wind blown. I would rather ride a bike with no shield than ride a bike that buffets. Buffeting will shake the glasses off your head and make it impossible to even read a road sign...It is caused by a few different issues.
It may be that the wind coming over the top of the shield is catching you right in the middle of the helmet. If that is the case, you need to either go up or down with your shield. I prefer lower....
If can also be coming from underneath. The easiest way to fix that is the fork fangs.
The final reason is the low pressure area behind the shield caused by punching a hole in the air. The best way to combat this is to move the shield forward or back...This is usually not the problem...
